With locations now in Boston and Philadelphia, product development firm grows its presence under new name.
Smithwise, a product development firm that provides industrial design, mechanical and electrical engineering, prototyping, supply chain development and manufacturing transfer, announced today a new company name and rebrand, following its expansion to Philadelphia.
Formerly known as Boston Device Development, Smithwise specializes in helping innovators advance concepts into robust designs and manufactured products, while reducing technical, regulatory and market risks along the path.
After establishing a strong presence in the Greater Boston region over the past seven years, Eric Sugalski, president of Smithwise, recognized the untapped opportunity in the Philadelphia area and set out to expand the company’s presence in that market. With venture capital for Philly’s technology and start-up market growing nearly $85 million in just the past year alone, the tech community will continue to thrive and become even more viable.

When it came to making a commitment to change the company’s name, Sugalski knew he wanted something that was going to showcase the growth of the business, while also keeping top of mind the core of what they do: product design and development. The word “Smithwise” itself encapsulates the concept of smart building.
Sugalski said, “A blacksmith creates objects from wrought iron or steel. A wordsmith creates intricate stories from words. Smithwise takes ideas and creates tangible, market-ready devices for the medical industry and beyond.”
To celebrate the expansion and rebrand, Smithwise will be hosting two separate parties in their respective cities, Boston and Philadelphia. The Boston event will be held at 73A Chapel Street, Newton, MA on Thursday, June 9 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., and the Philadelphia event will be held on Tuesday, June 7 at the company’s new office located at 3001 Market Street, Suite 140 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m.
